Job Description
Overview Mechanical Engineer – Contract: Healthcare – Location: London, E13 8SL – Hours of work: 37.5 – Contract Type: Permanent We are seeking a skilled and reliable Mechanical Engineer to join the Estates team at Newham University Hospital. The successful candidate will focus on the maintenance, repair, and installation of mechanical services, ensuring safe and efficient operation across the hospital estate. You will work closely with clinical, technical, and management staff, providing a high-quality service in a fast-paced healthcare environment. Key Responsibilities Perform maintenance, repairs, and installations of mechanical services. Respond to reactive repairs within agreed timescales. Diagnose faults and recommend spares or materials. Interface with the Helpdesk Administrator to ensure accurate job tracking. Conduct pre-planned maintenance, testing, and breakdown work. Service air handling and ventilation systems, including theatre environments. Maintain various equipment, including catering and alarm systems. Install and maintain water filtration and thermostatic controls. Provide mechanical cover for a 24/7 on-call rota. Undertake basic plumbing fixes, ventilation and heating checks, visual inspections, and water temperature monitoring. Professional and Personal Competencies/Qualifications Previous experience in planned and reactive mechanical maintenance, ideally in a healthcare or commercial setting. Strong fault diagnosis and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and under supervision. Willingness to undertake specialist training (e.g., Medical Gases, Legionella Competent Person). City & Guilds in a Mechanical Discipline (e.g., Plumbing) or equivalent qualification.
