Canal/Waterway Operative - Devizes

Job Title: Waterways Operative Location: Devizes Hours: Monday to Friday Pay: £12.87 per hour Contract: Temporary, start ASAP About the Role: Manpower is recruiting for a Waterways Operative to support the maintenance and operation of waterways in Devizes. The role involves outdoor, physical work to maintain and improve the waterway infrastructure, assist visitors, and protect the natural and historic environment. You will also support volunteers and respond to reactive maintenance tasks as needed. Key Responsibilities: Carry out maintenance and repair work to waterway infrastructure to ensure network availability. Operate Trust assets (locks, bridges) safely while providing excellent customer service. Undertake general waterway and waterside maintenance, including towpath improvements and litter removal. Protect the natural and historic environment during all works. Respond to reactive maintenance requests, participating in an on-call rota as required. Work alongside and lead volunteers to deliver high-quality results and maintain volunteer satisfaction. Support asset inspections and report structural issues, damage, or pollution incidents to the Area Operations Manager or Engineers. Complete tasks efficiently to the correct standard and within agreed schedules. About You: You must enjoy physical outdoor work in all seasons, respect nature, and be comfortable interacting with the public. A practical, positive, and solution-focused attitude is essential. Essential Skills & Qualities: Strong attention to the quality and standard of your work. Good communication and customer service skills. Basic literacy and numeracy. Some experience in manual, construction, or outdoor work. Basic IT skills (mobile devices, apps, inputting information). Desirable Skills & Qualities: Experience in a relevant outdoor or environmental role (paid or volunteer). Experience using tools, equipment, or machinery. Awareness of heritage and environmental issues. Ability to work alone or as part of a team. Ability to plan and deliver work to a schedule.
