Organisation/Company University of Perugia Research Field Engineering » Mechanical engineering Engineering » Aerospace engineering Engineering » Thermal engineering Researcher Profile First Stage Researcher (R1) Positions PhD Positions Country Italy Application Deadline 31 Oct 2025 - 23:59 (Europe/Rome) Type of Contract Temporary Job Status Full-time Hours Per Week 40 Is the job funded through the EU Research Framework Programme? Horizon Europe - MSCA Marie Curie Grant Agreement Number 101227540 Is the Job related to staff position within a Research Infrastructure? No Offer Description We are pleased to advertise 15 Doctoral Candidate positions to begin in 2025, as part of the Horizon Europe Doctoral Networks of the European Commission, funded through the project DT-HATS: “Digital-Twins for Hydrogen and Ammonia injection and ignition in engines for Transport Systems” . Each position lasts three years and will offer to the recruited Doctoral Candidates (DCs) an exciting research and training programme, enhancing their career perspectives in both the academic and non-academic sector. The recruited DCs will be enrolled in a PhD programme. In addition to their individual doctoral projects, all DCs will benefit from a dedicated training programme comprising an integrated curriculum of local and network wide training activities related to the development of scientific knowledge and the enhancement of transferable skills. What is DT-HATS? Project Description: DT-HATS focuses on the decarbonization of the heavy-duty transport sector – which is currently responsible for about 30% of the sector CO₂ emissions – by exploiting the combination of green hydrogen and ammonia with their technical and economic potentials. The project will offer a systematic training to the recruited doctoral candidates who will produce new knowledge in ammonia and hydrogen flow and reacting processes realized in powertrains used for transport and efficient utilization in the H₂ ecosystems. The overall aim is to: research H₂ and NH₃ as fuels from a fundamental level to build a detailed database; develop new validated CFD models specific for H₂ and NH₃, enhanced with ML for faster, predictive design; create reduced-order models based on multi-fidelity CFD-ML data and experiments for efficient exploration of H₂ and NH₃ ecosystems, from component level like injectors to system level like engines, to aid decarbonization in transport sectors. Ultimately, DT-HATS through its research and training programs at the intersection of energy engineering and computational science will strength digital skills and expertise of young scientists and entrepreneurs to tackle present and future challenges and will also promote green e-fuels adoption in transport, boosting renewable energy growth. The project DT-HATS will recruit 15 Doctoral Candidates (DC) among nine prominent universities, research institutions, and companies, spread across five countries in Europe (Italy, United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Belgium). In addition, nine Associate Partners (including reciprocating engine, aeroengine, and fuel system industries, in addition to EU and extra-EU research institutions) will support training and secondments for the DCs. Fully funded 3-year PhD position Travel and conference participation budget Access to state-of-the-art laboratories and computing facilities International and interdisciplinary research environment Secondment of 4 to 6 months to other network partners or associated partners Consortium: Beneficiary Partners (recruiting organizations): City University of London, UK, (CITY) Brunel University London, UK, (BRUNEL) University of Stuttgart, Germany, (USTUTT) The DT-HATS consortium also includes the following Associated Partners (academic and non academic organisations), which contribute to training and secondments: Convergent Science GmbH, Austria, (CONVERGE) UChicago Argonne LLC, US, (ARGONNE) Robert BOSCH GmbH, Germany, (BOSCH) Toyota Gazoo Racing Europe GmbH, Germany, (TOYOTA) Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, UK, (IMPERIAL) Carnot Engines Ltd, UK, (CARNOT) King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, KSA, (KAUST) Airbus Operations Sas, France, (AIRBUS) PhD Positions Offered: DC1 Recruiting Institution : BRUNEL (UK) PhD Awarding Institution : BRUNEL (UK) Academic Supervisor : Prof Zhao (BRUNEL) Co-Supervisor : Dr Botter (TOYOTA) Research Topic : Experimental characterisation of hydrogen injection, mixing and ignition with final ROM of engine performance.
