SPEC is seeking an experienced and motivated Civil/Structural Design Drafting Manager to lead our civil/structural design department in delivering high-quality design documentation for projects in the petrochemical, oil & gas, and heavy industrial sectors. This position requires deep expertise in structural steel, concrete, masonry, and grading and drainage design with a strong familiarity with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, and proven success in managing a drafting team through all phases of project execution. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising a team of approximately 10 civil/structural design drafters, overseeing drawing production across multiple projects, managing workload distribution, and conducting formal staff performance reviews. The position has a flexible 9/80 work schedule with a hybrid work location, supporting SPEC's Fountain Valley office. Responsibilities Team Management & Leadership: Supervise, coach, and develop a team of ~10 civil/structural design drafters. Allocate resources and assign staff to projects based on workload projections and project schedules. Conduct annual performance evaluations, goal-setting sessions, and provide mentorship to support career growth and skill development. Enforce drafting standards, workflows, and quality control procedures. Technical Oversight: Review and approve detailed drawings for concrete foundations, steel structures, pipe racks, equipment supports, and other infrastructure typical of oil and gas or heavy industrial facilities. Review and approve rough and fine grading plans, storm water conveyance, erosion control improvements and related site development. Ensure deliverables meet industry standards (AISC, ACI, ASCE, API), client requirements, and company quality expectations. Work collaboratively with engineering leads to ensure design intent is accurately translated into drawings. Project & Workflow Coordination: Oversee the drafting component of projects from concept to final deliverables. Balance team capacity across projects to optimize throughput and avoid bottlenecks or overloading. Participate in project kickoffs, milestone reviews, drawing submittals and proposed project estimates. Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and drawing consistency. Software Expertise & CAD Standards: Ensure team proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D, with attention to 2D and 3D deliverables. Lead or participate in CAD template management, tool development, and training initiatives. Troubleshoot software-related challenges and act as a technical mentor to junior staff. Minimum Qualifications Minimum 10 years of experience in civil/structural design and drafting, including detailed steel and concrete drawing production. Minimum 5 years of experience in a managerial or supervisory role overseeing a multi-person drafting team. Demonstrated experience working on projects in the oil & gas, refinery, petrochemical, or related industrial sectors. Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D (2020 or newer). Strong knowledge of civil/structural codes and drawing standards relevant to the energy and industrial sectors. Proven ability to manage multiple projects and staff simultaneously with attention to schedules and quality. Strong communication, coordination, and organizational skills. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required. Preferred Qualifications Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting & Design, Engineering Technology, or related field. Experience with other CAD platforms (e.g., Navisworks, Plant 3D, Revit Structure) is a plus. Experience working with multidisciplinary project teams in an EPC or consulting environment.
