EMERGENCY is an independent and neutral international organisation founded in 1994 to provide free, high-quality medical and surgical care to victims of war, landmines, and poverty. EMERGENCY promotes a culture of peace, solidarity, and respect for human rights. We work sustainably by building healthcare facilities, training local personnel, and conducting search and rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea. ROSTER POSITION FOR: Sierra Leone and Afghanistan TYPE OF CONTRACT: Fixed-term contract (6 months), including a monthly salary, travel expenses, board and lodgings, insurance cover (liability, health, and accident insurance), and paid leave at the end of the mission. The Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon manages orthopaedic and trauma surgical procedures independently and autonomously. They will share management of polytrauma patients with the General Surgeon and collaborate with all healthcare personnel (doctors, nurses, physiotherapists) in patient care. BACKGROUND AND ORGANIZATION OF WORK The Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon will work as part of a team of international specialists, organizing and conducting training for local medical staff. They will collaborate with physiotherapists in physiotherapy care and plaster cast management. In the absence of a physiotherapist, they will supervise national physiotherapists. They report to the Medical Coordinator, responsible for project management and organization. The surgeon is usually present in the hospital from 08:00 to 16:00 but is on call 24/7 for emergencies, including mass casualties. Daily activities include ward rounds, outpatient clinics, emergency department work, and operating theatre procedures. The team includes anesthetists, theatre nurses, and technicians. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES All EMERGENCY staff must adhere to hospital admission criteria, guidelines, protocols, and treatment standards, ensuring proper clinical records and statistics are maintained in both digital and paper formats. The main responsibilities include: Evaluating orthopaedic patients and treatment options; Managing orthopaedic trauma surgeries; Assisting in clinical care management; Supervising and participating in outpatient clinics; Supporting clinical research and record-keeping as required by EMERGENCY's scientific programs. Clinical decisions should be discussed with the Medical Coordinator, colleagues, and nursing staff. MANAGEMENT OF SUPPLY ORDERS The surgeon is responsible for checking and informing the Medical Coordinator of any needs for surgical instruments and equipment. MANAGEMENT AND TRAINING OF LOCAL PERSONNEL Activities are carried out alongside local staff, providing training and specific teaching sessions as per clinical protocols and agreements with the Medical Coordinator. REQUIREMENTS Medical Degree and current registration in your country; Specialization in Orthopaedics and Trauma; Minimum 5 years of hospital experience; Experience in a trauma department is advantageous.
