Job Description

Your role: A Gap Year in the Navy gives you an exciting taste of life in the ADF with just one year’s commitment. You’ll get paid for meaningful work, receive full Navy training, and enjoy memorable experiences – unlike anything you’d encounter in a regular gap year. As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll shadow the Navy’s engineering experts while getting paid to travel, both at sea and to different Navy bases around Australia. With their help, you’ll learn to manage the operation, maintenance and repair of the engineering system critical to the ship's mission. Your 12-month experience is divided into stages. First, you’ll get paid to learn the military and job-specific skills you need for your role. Then you’ll post to a unit to apply your newly learned skills, and you may have opportunities to travel around Australia to take part in domestic exercises and operations. Plus, you'll be supported by professional and enthusiastic Navy personnel throughout your experience. After finishing your Gap Year program, you can choose to continue a career in the Navy or you can use your new skills and experiences in future careers outside the ADF. Your duties may include: operating and maintaining sophisticated combat, communication, navigation, radar, sonar and weapons systems contributing to Navy exercises and operations. As an officer, you'll also perform additional general duties that support the whole ship, including: boat security and first aid firefighting and flood repair assisting with medical, ammunitioning or ceremonial duties.
