Location: Tijuana, Mexico Position Summary We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in sheet metal product development. This mid-level role involves designing manufacturable, cost-effective products from concept to production, using advanced engineering tools and methodologies, while collaborating effectively across teams. Key Responsibilities: Design sheet metal components and create detailed designs and specifications based on project requirements. Design sheet metal tooling for use with existing manufacturing equipment for new product portfolios. Select appropriate sheet metal materials and apply nesting techniques to optimize material usage. Optimize designs for functionality, structural integrity, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness. Perform stress analysis and apply engineering principles to ensure performance requirements are met. Verify and validate designs through prototyping and testing in collaboration with manufacturing teams. Design processes with manufacturability in mind, ensuring efficient, cost-effective production with minimal waste. Create and maintain accurate technical documentation, including drawings, specifications, and BOMs. Source suppliers and maintain long-term relationships with vendors and key suppliers. Facilitate communication between vendors and internal teams (Production, Technical, Maintenance, Engineering). Interpret technical drawings and ensure alignment with manufacturing and quality standards. Support New Product Introduction (NPI), Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), and PPAP processes. Perform reverse engineering of legacy products for redesign, cost reduction, or performance improvement. Apply value-added engineering methodologies to enhance product performance and reduce costs. Program and operate CNC punch presses, laser cutters, and brake presses. Select appropriate manufacturing processes and materials for new designs. Technical Skills: Proficient in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo) with Sheet Metal module expertise. Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5. Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for stress and deformation analysis. Familiarity with DFMEA, PFMEA, and Root Cause Analysis (RCA). Hands-on experience with ERP systems for BOM and part management. Skilled in CNC programming for punch, laser, and press brake machines. Understanding of metal forming, welding, riveting, and fastening techniques. Knowledge of ISO 9001:2015, and UL/ Intertek /NEMA /IEEE standards. Experience with tolerance stack-up analysis and design validation testing. Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and Kaizen principles. Ability to perform reverse engineering using tools like CMM, 3D scanning, or manual methods. Competence in technical documentation, engineering change management, and revision control. Familiarity with CNC machining, laser cutting, and welding technologies. Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving and analytical thinking. Effective communication skills for cross-functional collaboration. Team-oriented with the ability to work independently when needed. Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and documentation skills. Adaptable and open to learning new tools, technologies, and processes. Time management skills to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines. Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement. Customer-focused approach to design and engineering solutions. Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English for effective shop floor and engineering communication. Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Minimum 5 years of experience in sheet metal design and fabrication.
