Journeyman Equipment Technician

JOB SUMMARY: The Journeyman Equipment Technician is responsible for independent diagnosis, failure analysis, and repair of Caterpillar and allied equipment. Duties include removing, repairing, assembling, and installing components according to manufacturer specifications and technician skillset. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Safety Promote and advocate safety at Western States, ensuring a safe environment for all employees, vendors, and clients, adhering to safety policies and standards. Complete Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) prior to tasks as per policy. Maintain a clean and clutter-free work area. Wear and adhere to required PPE. Diagnosis, Troubleshooting, and Repair Demonstrate troubleshooting skills on engine and equipment systems. Perform appropriate testing and compare data to specifications. Diagnose and repair machine failures within time guidelines. Conduct inspections and troubleshooting independently during scheduled maintenance. Engines and Powertrain Perform engine preventative maintenance and internal component inspections. Troubleshoot and repair powertrain components. Understand and repair brake systems as needed. Electrical, Hydraulics, HVAC, and Cab Test and repair complex electrical systems, including connectors and harnesses. Service HVAC systems, including evacuating and recharging. Perform mechanical and electrical cab functions. Undercarriage Troubleshoot and repair undercarriage systems, including tracks and suspension components. Perform track sag measurements and component identification. Continued Development Participate in ongoing education and training. Use service manuals and parts guidelines to perform tasks. Complete service reports promptly. Address inquiries professionally and efficiently. Perform additional duties as assigned to enhance productivity. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Proficiency with Microsoft Office products. Obtain certifications for specialty equipment as needed. Familiarity with manufacturer software (SIS, ET, STW). Effective communication and relationship-building skills. Reliable attendance, timeliness, and ability to work overtime. Alignment with Western States' purpose, vision, and values. Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Associate degree or trade diploma preferred. At least three years of experience with Caterpillar or similar equipment, including hydraulics, engine, and powertrain. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Technician tools appropriate for the role. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Physical Characteristics: Ability to stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, reach, bend, and twist as needed. Generate force up to 97 ft./lbs. Lift up to 60 lbs repeatedly; carry 20 lbs over stairs. Ascend/descend ladders and perform mechanical tasks requiring bending and kneeling.
