Technical Lead

Technical Lead – Public Sector London (at least 1 day per week onsite) | Permanent We’re supporting a public sector team that’s rebuilding how it delivers digital services – not tweaking legacy systems, but properly rethinking them. They’re hiring a Technical Lead to help shape that change. You’ll report into the Head of Digital Engineering and play a central role in how new software gets designed, delivered, and maintained. It’s a hands-on role, but with real influence: you’ll be guiding engineering standards, mentoring other developers, and helping the organisation shift to a stronger in-house capability. This is for someone who’s confident working across front and back-end development, comfortable making architectural decisions, and wants to build services that make a difference to people’s lives. What you’ll be doing: Leading the delivery of digital services from discovery through to live Writing production code, reviewing work, and setting development standards Working across multiple teams to support technical direction and delivery Designing services that are accessible, user-focused, and robust Defining and improving engineering process – from CI/CD to test automation Collaborating with product, delivery, and policy teams Sharing ideas across local government tech communities, contributing to meetups and design systems What they’re looking for: A senior developer with experience across the full stack (Java, Python, JavaScript, React, etc.) Comfortable building products in an agile, multidisciplinary team Someone who’s led or supported other developers through delivery Experience working with APIs, cloud infrastructure, and modern dev practices Able to design systems that serve a wide range of users and meet accessibility standards Experience with design systems, microservices, or GDS standards is a plus – but not essential Why this role matters: This team is building services used by thousands of people who rely on the council – from housing to social care.
