Job Description

The Packaging Engineer is responsible for the development of new, innovative, and economical packaging. This individual in this position will also be responsible for designing packaging with the consideration of waste reduction and minimal use of non-recyclable components.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function of the job.

  • Review, recommend, and implement changes to existing packaging and processes with an eye towards reducing waste.

  • Review current package styles and components with an eye towards removing pieces and parts to reduce the cost of the package, while maintaining package durability during storage and transportation.

  • Design formal testing procedures, test proposed changes, and report test results.

  • Identify and recommend necessary equipment to make packaging changes.

  • Utilize Auto Cad to create drawings and project plans for implementation of change.

  • Suggest changes to current packaging line configuration to reduce waste in the process.

  • Lead projects and work with management and team members to implement change.

  • Write specifications, procedures, and reports.

  • Maintain good housekeeping and regularly clean work area, machines, and equipment.

  • Identify and contribute to continuous improvement efforts to reduce costs or increase productivity without reducing effectiveness.

  • Maintain an open and candid working relationship with immediate supervisor/manager in discussing matters of importance.

  • Adhere to established company values, practices, policies and procedures at all times. Follow and support compliance with all applicable safety rules, laws, regulations, and standards.

  • Demonstrate regular and punctual attendance at the assigned work location.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

An individual qualified for this job must be able to:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

  • Write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, fellow associates, and senior management.

  • Successfully reason, define problems, collect data, and draw valid conclusions to solve complex matters.

  • Accurately estimate engineering time, material, costs, and resources required for proposed projects.

  • Accurately multiply, divide, add, and subtract whole numbers to resolve practical problems.

  • Operate a computer—PC proficiency; use spreadsheets and reporting software effectively.

  • Wear/use required PPE (personal protective equipment).

  • Understand written instruction and complete appropriate documentation as directed.

  • Use a logical approach to troubleshooting issues and prioritizing production needs.

  • Recognize problems when they occur and to work toward the solution of those problems.

  • Pay attention to details and pursue quality in accomplishing work duties and tasks. Look for opportunities to reduce costs or increase productivity without reducing effectiveness.

  • Handle challenges skillfully, thoroughly, and effectively.

  • Effectively and professionally communicate with co-workers, team members, and internal or external customers. Present information clearly and accurately.

  • Independently take advantage of opportunities to improve or increase skills, abilities and job knowledge.

  • Make sure that work is delivered on time and of high quality.

  • Develop good work practices in order to get the job done.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND CERTITICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical or industrial engineering or a related field and at least 8 years of related experience; or any or any satisfactory combination of education and experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above duties.
